Resolute Black was recently reunited after a two-year hiatus and did not disappoint. The team, comprised of top Resolute players from the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Elite teams, proved that they can compete with programs from across the nation by making a strong showing at the Dick’s Tournament of Champions.

The tournament consisted of 4 pool play games and followed by playoffs. With a winning record in pool play, Resolute Black earned the #2 seed with a record of 3-1, scoring 28 goals and allowing 8 just goals. Pool play results were as follows:

Resolute Black – 2
Copperhead Black (GA) – 5

Resolute Black – 8
Team Atlanta – 1

Resolute Black – 13
Dynasty Lax (CO) – 2

Resolute Black – 5
FCA South Florida – 0

As the #2 seed, Resolute Black earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs by virtue of Atlanta Crush (GA) forfeiting the game 1-0.  The quarterfinal game was against Canada’s Edge Prep 2017 squad.  In a very hard fought match that was very competitive until Resolute Black pulled away at the end, ousting Canada’s Edge13-6. Resolute Black was paced again by strong goalie play from Matthew Schmidt (Culver Military Academy, Notre Dame, Resolute 2017).  Scoring came from Nick Musci (Desales, Ohio State, Resolute 2016), Griffin Hughes (Liberty, Ohio State, Resolute 2017), Harrison Schertzinger (Summit CD, UNC, Resolute 2018) and Henry Schertzinger (Summit CD, UNC, Resolute 2018), Austin Popovich (Desales, Robert Morris, Resolute 2016) and LSM, Chase Snyder (Liberty, Resolute 2017).  Evan Kamp (St.X (OH), Resolute 2016) FOGO did a tremendous job allowing Resolute Black to gain valuable possessions.

In the semi-final match against FCA National, Resolute Black took a 3-1 lead into halftime only to let it slip away at the end losing 8-6.  An empty netter sealed the game for FCA National with a little under a minute to play as Resolute Black had a few opportunities to tie the game. Hughes, Musci, Popovich and Henry Schertzinger netted goals in the loss.

The 3rd place game featured Resolute Black versus NJLC who finished 3-1 in their pool play and upset Brady’s Bunch (CA) in the quarterfinals, only to lose to eventual Champion, Road Warriors from Upstate NY’s reservation.  Resolute Black jumped out to a 5-0 lead within 7 minutes into the game and never looked back as they won 10-4.  Scoring was distributed amongst Musci, Popovich, Hughes, both Henry and Harrison Schertzinger, Jake Dodson (Coffman, Resolute 2016), Mitch Spaulding (St. Charles, Resolute 2017), Mason Reynolds (Strongsville, Resolute 2016), Matthew Blevins (Hilliard Davidson, Resolute 2017) and David St. Clair (Hilliard Davidson, Resolute 2017).  Nick Adams (Carmel, Resolute 2017) drew lots of attention feeding goal scorers with multiple assists.  Blake Roshkowski (St. X (KY) displayed unmatched speed between the lines to start the offense as the competition could not catch him.  The defense was lead by Zach Whitenack (Olentangy, Resolute 2016) forcing turnovers and multiple take aways. Strong team defense lead to transition goals from Jack Desantis (DeSales, Maryland, Resolute 2018), Brendan Margolies (Olentangy, Resolute 2016), Carter Wheat (Liberty, Resolute 2016) and Colton Hillary (DeSales, Resolute 2017).

As a result of their finish in the top three, Resolute Black received their 3rd place medals and an automatic invite to the 2015 Dick’s TOC tournament.
